Edgar Degas was born in Paris on July 19, 1834, into a wealthy banking family. He studied classical painting but spent his career breaking from it, spending hours observing dancers backstage at the Paris Opéra and capturing their rehearsals, exhaustion, and occasional grace in pastels that no one else at the time was using with such control. His roughly 1,500 works in that medium form one of the largest bodies of pastel work in art history. Fourteen years later, on July 19, 1848, 300 men and women gathered at a chapel in Seneca Falls, New York, to demand equal rights for women. Elizabeth Cady Stanton had drafted a Declaration of Sentiments modeled on the Declaration of Independence. Of the 68 resolutions adopted, only one was contested — the demand for the right to vote, which Stanton insisted on keeping. Women in the United States gained that right 72 years later, in 1920.
